Agglomeration, Technology and Business Groups

If you were to ask any management doctoral student, or professor for that matter, "What is a business group?" you might be informed that it is a "collection of firms bound together in some formal and/or informal ways" (Granovetter, 1995: 95) that is "legally independent, with economic (such as ownership, financial, and commercial) and social (such as family, kinship, and friendship) ties" (Yiu, Bruton, & Lu, 2005: 183). Among the most basic questions one might ask about any book are the following: Is there a need for such a book? Is the theory expounded in it truly applicable in the current climate? The answer to the first of these questions regarding this book is eminently affirmative, bearing in mind that business groups have a significant economic impact on emerging economies.
