Self-Assessment: The Complex Process of Determining 'How We Are Doing'-A Perspective From Medical Education

Self-assessment capability, or the ability to recognize our strengths and weaknesses in relation to the context of life and work, is an implicit assumption that undergirds our societal expectation of mature individuals. Nowhere is this expectation truer than in the professions, where knowledge is growing at an increasing rate, and maintaining competency is an essential professional responsibility. Medicine and the health professions, among others, must address these challenges continuously, at both the collective professional and the individual practitioner levels.
