摘要

Challenges related to the energy transition have led scientists to seek the ways and means to sequester carbon dioxide. Use of CO_2 injection to enhance oil recovery from existing fields and CO_2 storage in depleted oil and gas fields provide obvious opportunities for CO_2 sequestration. As well as the interest in existing fields, there has been a significant drive to identify potential storage sites in recent years, as well as in the larger saline aquifers in which they are situated. The aim of this Thematic Set of the AAPG Bulletin is to demonstrate how important it is to use subsurface (seismic, well log and core) data acquired in the pursuit of hydrocarbons in the evaluation of carbon stores be they active fields, depleted ones or saline aquifers. The submission of articles that focus on the geology and geophysics of carbon sequestration are welcomed. It is intended that the papers will showcase case histories from areas where successful EOR projects have been carried out and carbon storage studies have been or will be undertaken. The papers should provide valuable insights and generic lessons from subsurface exemplars that can be used when considering other potential geological sites.
