From a quality of life and health economic perspective, TKA for appropriately selected patients appears to be a prudent use of healthcare resources [8]. However, it is widely confirmed that 15% to 20% of patients are dissatisfied with the outcome of the procedure, even after expected recovery. This is a serious concern as we shift healthcare delivery to a value-based model that prioritizes the patient’s perception of his or her care and outcomes. The absence of pain or return of normal function (a complete response) after TKA has been consistently associated with high satisfaction levels [6]. However, residual pain or persistent functional impairment is not uncommon after TKA [9]. As expected, in patients with these residual limitations, satisfaction is less predictable. Meanwhile, advances in implant material and design as well as surgical techniques have not resulted in improved patient satisfaction after TKA [7]. In fact, a host of surgical and postoperative factors, including changes in patient-reported outcome measures, only inconsistently correlate with satisfaction [4].
