Environment-friendly antibiofilm molecules are urgently needed to be used in medicine and various other fields. Jouault et al. (e00893-20) described the antibiofilm protein alterocin, which is active against a wide range of bacteria, including human pathogens. Genes for alterocin and its homologs were found in marine bacteria, mostly from the Pseudoalteromonas genus. This protein family likely plays an important function in the biology of producer bacteria and is thus of ecological interest, in addition to having biotechnological potential.
