Communication is an essential skill in medicine and navigating difficult conversations is an advanced communication competency. Navigating difficult conversations is an important skill residents need to develop as they transition from a trainee into independent practice. While residents tend to rely on scripts and routinized approaches when communicating difficult news, experienced physicians employ flexible and adaptive strategies in these situations. Our limited understanding of how residents learn to navigate difficult conversations with patients and families restricts our ability to teach this skill effectively.
