CORR Insights®: The Pattern of Acetabular Cartilage Wear Is Hip Morphology-dependent and Patient Demographic-dependent

The pathway “(ab)normal morphology—pathology—complaint—treatment” looks familiar at first glance, but it proves elusive when closely examined. Like any body part, the hip may go through these well-known phases. First, the normal physiological environment or morphology of the hip is subjected to disease, to new internal or external influences, or to alterations in general. Then, if sufficiently susceptible (or predisposed), the hip may experience pathological changes. These changes may or may not give rise to clinical symptoms, which in turn, may or may not require treatment. However, exactly why, when, and how these phases progress often remain a mystery.
