Journal Club—COPD2020 Update. Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease 2020 Report and the Journal of the COPD Foundation Special Edition Moving to a New Definition for COPD: COPDGene® 2019

In 2001 an international expert panel published a consensus report, “Global Strategy for the Diagnosis, Management and Prevention of COPD.” With the backing and support of the U.S. National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and the World Health Organization, a multi-disciplinary consortium of experts convened to review the existing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) guidelines at the time and provide an evidence-based review of the current literature including clinical studies, epidemiology, socioeconomic and pathogenic mechanisms. Recommendations were provided with a grading of the evidence upon which the recommendations were made. This marked the formation of a network of national leaders and the beginning of the Global initiative for chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) reports.
