THE ADAPTIVE AND TECHNICAL CHALLENGES IN DEMENTIA PATIENTS CARE AMONG GERONTOLOGICAL NURSES IN SHANGHAI CHINA

Aims: To discuss the adaptive and technical challenges for dementia patients care, including needs for professional training in Shanghai China. Methods: Focus group interviews were conducted with eight Gerontological nurses working in nursing homes in Shanghai, China to collect the experiences of challenges and coping strategies, such as team cooperation and communication, and staff needs for additional training. Four themes were extracted: (1)The dementia caregivers were facing multiple challenges. (2)The coping strategies among the dementia caregivers were simple and inefficient. (3)The dementia caregivers were expecting more professional training systems for dementia care. (4)The factors were restricting professional development. Conclusions: Both adaptive and technical challenges for dementia care were identified. Effective professional training systems for dementia care are needed to deal with the lack of effective coping strategies, as well as improved social and economic support.
