Automation of a Medical Intensive Care Environment with a Flexible Configuration of Computer Systems

The Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) of the Clinical Center at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has been automated with a combination of four computer systems: 1) a Patient Monitoring System, 2) a Vascular Research System, 3) a Scintilation Camera and Software Development System, and 4) a Medical Mass Spectrometer System. Members of the medical staff use the automated techniques for measurement, analysis, control, and record keeping functions. The configuration and use of these computer systems in the MICU is presented as well as future development plans.
