Ambivalent Pathos:The Essence of Byronic Hero

摘要

George Gordon Byron (1788-1824) was a great poet in English romantic literature in the 19th century. His works have a strong spirit of rebellion and resistance. And the Byronic hero refers to a series of characters with the same characteristics in his works, such as Childe in Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, Conrad in Pirate, Manfred in Manfred, and Don Juan in Don Juan. On the one hand, these characters are stubborn and brave in the pursuit of freedom and happiness, and full of the spirit of struggle and resistance. On the other hand, they are aloof, melancholy, detached from the masses, and alienated from everything. By analyzing the origin of Byron and Byronic heroes and summarizing the characteristicsand essence of Byronic heroes, this paper makes people have a clear understanding of the development of literature in the 19th century and Byron's artistic creation style.
