It is one of her masterpieces. It is written for Mr. Rochester’s mad wife Bertha who was confined in the attic. The essay applies dream theory to analyze the actress Antoinette’s three dreams in Wide Sargasso Sea from the angle of structural psychoanalysis. It reveals the tragic fate of the heroine who experienced an unhappy marriage and lost her self identity under the oppression of patriarchal society and racial discrimination.
