'Bartleby,the Scrivener'is a short story by the American writer Herman Melville.Numerous essays have been published on this masterpiece of the short fiction of the Melville canon.In this essay,psychological criticism is applied to make a psychoanalysis of Bartleby,the protagonist in the story.And Freud’s psychoanalytical hypothesis of'a structural model of psychic process'is employed to analyze Bartleby’s psychological world,with focus on two images in the story—'ginger nuts'and'dead letters'to further explore the inner world of the character.
