Recently, the genome sequences of Meloidogyne incognita and M. hapla have been published. The sequencing project for Heterodera glycines and Globodera pallida is also underway. As of 2008, there has been over 500 000 ESTs and 1.2 million genome sequences from more than 30 nematodes in Nematode. Net. Plant nematolo-gy is now facing the challenge of developing new technology for screening the practical benefits out of the increasing amounts of genomic information. Given the absence of a transformation system for plant parasitic nematodes, RNAi is likely to be an important tool for the study of functional genomics in phytoparasitic nematode.
