As a discipline, Discourse Analysis(DA) has played an increasingly important role in the study of language. Conversations among characters in The Gadfly play an important role in interpreting the complex mind of the hero. This paper employs DA theories, including Speech Act Theory(SAT), Cooperative Principle(CP), and Politeness Principle(PP) to appreciate this great work. Thus, we can find a distinct contrast between Arthur and Rivarez, and the agony in Rivarez’s mind.
