A Critical Review of The Role of Age of Acquisition in Late Second Lan-guage Oral Proficiency Attainment

摘要

Critical Period Hypothesis(CPH)and the Cognitive Aging Hypothesis(CAH)are two opposite theories which explain the correlation between age and language. The CPH proponents assume that age of acquisition(AOA)has nothing to do with post-criti⁃cal-period SLA because early bilingualism is essentially different from late bilingualism(Satio,2015).In contrast, the CAH claims that age of acquisition can be a significant predictor of not only early but also late bilinguals’ultimate attainment because they use the same learning mechanism for L1 and L2 acquisition(DeKeyser,2013).This paper will further examine the correlation between age and second language acquisition based on“The role of age of Acquisition in Late Second Language Oral Proficiency Attain⁃ment”,Satio(2015)37:713-743.
