Shock of the Common Fear: Voices and Visions in Philip Larkin's “The Building”

摘要

The present study addresses Philip Larkin’s 1972 poem"The Building"in an attempt to investigate the unique way of discourse and the shifting perspectives in the speaker’s description of the building.At current stage,there are roughly two directions among critics concerning the discussion of this poem:one is the study of theme;the other is the study of the interaction between the speaker and the audience,but seldom has any been explored extensively enough.Therefore,this paper intends to research further into Larkin’s techniques in this poem and will also demonstrate how these techniques contribute to the expression of the theme.
