Against the background of localization in Taiwan, The Ancient Capitals, by Chu Tien-hsin, a writer from the provinces, is a text of fiction that, both a political and cultural critique, writes fragments of historical memory by shifting in a geographical space and breaking the linear structure of history, spreading out the footsteps and memories between Taipei and Kyoto in a story of arrivals for an appointment. In the switches between the two ancient capitals, the narrator chains up footsteps scattered in the two spaces with paths visible or hidden. The way multiple spaces are narrated produces spatial pitfalls so that, within and without the text, different features and historical sources of Kyoto become the primary points for exploring the significance of the space. With Kyoto contrasted with Taipei, in a relationship of the colonizer and the colonized, the narrator revisits Taiwan with a colonial map in pursuit of colonial memory by deconstructing the mirror image of the“Peach Flower Source”that reflects postcolonial reflections upon the situation of Taiwan.%在台湾本土化背景下,外省籍作家朱天心的《古都》是一个具有政治与文化双重批判性的小说文本。
