中国英语学习者“直接宾语/主语”类花园路径句的理解

         

摘要

本研究通过内省选择题测试和问答题测试考查了某大学英语专业三年级和四年级100余名学生理解“直接宾语/主语”类花园路径句的情况。测试结果表明,高级水平组未达到花园路径现象的触发标准;中级水平组达到花园路径现象的触发标准,出现了花园路径现象,且在成功消歧后仍出现了曲解残留问题。分析显示,花园路径现象的发生是由于受试尚未成功习得有标记的一位谓词,更倾向于根据“最少节点挂靠原则”将语言进行简化处理,将新加入的结构挂靠在已有节点并产生花园路径现象;而挂靠节点的重新选择则增加了处理难度,从而导致曲解残留现象的发生。%The comprehension of “direct object/subject” garden path sentences by intermediate⁃ and upper⁃level Chinese learners of English is explored through an introspective multiple choice test and a ques⁃tion⁃and⁃answer test. 109 third⁃year and fourth⁃year college students were chosen as subjects. Results show that the 60⁃percent triggering condition is met in the advanced group and no garden path ambiguity is found, whereas the garden path ambiguity is resulted and eliminated by the intermediate group.The question⁃and⁃an⁃swer test revealed the residual of the initial misunderstanding among the intermediate level subjects.The suc⁃cessful disambiguation results from the acquisition of the different theta⁃roles of the verbs by the upper⁃level subjects.However, according to the Attract the Closest Principle, due to the failure in acquiring the one⁃place argument, the intermediate⁃level subjects tend to attach the new constituent to the existed node and thus results in the garden⁃path ambiguity. The reselection of the node to attach to increase the difficulty in sentence processing and thus the residual of the misunderstanding is resulted.
