Clipped words in English can reflect phenomena of language variation and change. Such words, including the words shortened by blending, are products of language variation. If any one of these has been so successfully created that it has completely replaced the original word or words from which it was created, the process can be considered an instance of language change, Many clipped words exist only in certain varieties of English.%英语截短词可反映语言的变异与变化现象。截短词本身就是语言变异的结果。如果某个截短词的生成非常成功，以至完全顶替了原来的词语，这个过程就是语言变化的一个例子。不少英语截短词仅存在于某一语言变体之中。对英语截短词的研究可以揭示语言变异与变化的一些规律。
