Ulysses is called ＂Double Dutch＂ by many critics. In this book, James Joyce uses modern style and complicated language to illustrate sufficient contents. In this thesis, the author will analyze ＂mother＂ as a whole, in order to find out what James Joycet under- standing of ＂mother＂ really is and then chase down what his country Ireland means to him.%乔伊斯的小说《尤利西斯》被称为“天书”，不但是因为其形式、语言的现代性，还由于其内容的丰富繁杂。《尤利西斯》中的母亲形象影射的是“祖国母亲”。小说反映出作者对于故乡又爱又恨的复杂情愫，突出了乔伊斯小说中所共有的“祖国”主题。
