Kate Chopin’s The Awakening challenges the notion of motherhood, which reflects her exploration of female identity and the fetters that women confronted when they searched for their suitable value system in the 19th century. Utilizing Adrienne Rich’s notion of “two mothers”, this essay reevaluates three women’s identity. It is suggested that Chopin sati-rizes female identity under male gaze by depicting Adele as an ideal mother-woman, Reisz’ untraditional image of Other is a partial loss of female identity and Edna is bound to lose herself in pursuit of her female space.%凯特•萧邦的作品《觉醒》挑战了母性理念,反映作者对女性身份的探索和19世纪女性寻求适合自己的价值体系中受到的种种束缚。
