During the latter half of the Spring and Autumn Period, overlords came out in succession and men of talent were coming forward in multitudes. Zi Chan, a person from a small country Zheng, played an unusual significant role in diplomacy. He traveled among different countries as a negotiator, making himself a man of the hour in the Spring and Autumn Period. He was acknowledged by later researchers as the “First Man of the Spring and Autumn Period”. Zi Chan was a man with foresight and sagacity, having the consciousness of hardships; he was also a very good diplomatist, self-confident, reasonable and profitable. He advocated that “In line with the conviction that I will do whatever it takes to serve my country even at the cost of my own life”, and pushed forward reform bravely. As a knowledgeable and talented person, he was good at appointing the virtuous and capable, and developed the first talent pool in the history.
