[Methods] WFX-12 atomic absorption spectrometer was used to determine Ca, Cu, Zn, Mn and Cd in serum of 59 adult male schizophrenic patients and 30 healthy adults. [Results] The serum concentrations of Zn, Cu, Ca in schizophrenic patients were significantly lower than those in healthy adults( P <0.01), while the concentration of Cd in schizophrenic patients was significantly higher than that in healthy adults( P <0.01). There were significant differences in Ca, Zn, Cu and Mn in serum of schizophrenic patients with different age( P >0.05). The content of Cd increased by aging( P <0. 05). There is no obvious relationship between the levels of serum trace elements and body weight or the course of disease( P >0.05). [Conclusion]There are differences in Ca, Cu, Zn and Cd in serum between adult male schizophrenic patients and healthy male adults. The content of Cd increases by aging.
