In ＂The Chrysanthemums＂, Steinbeck describes Elisa＇ s tragic fate in the patriarchal society, shadowed by her suppression, anxiety, enlightment, disappointment, and surrender, which provides a clue for us to probe into people＇ s malpositioned spirit - ecology in the 1930s in the US. While being busy with pursuing material wealth, people＇ s personality is being distorted.
