Heart of Darkness——the analysis of Edger Allen Poe’s work “Black Cat” from the perspective of psychoanalysis

摘要

From the perspective of Freudian theories of psychoanalysis,Black Cat is a story about how an imbalanced personality led to the selfdestruction. The struggle between the protagonist’s id and superego eventually caused the release of the id and evil behaviors. The protagonist’s abnormal behavior is also a performance of the unconscious theory and the death drive theory. It is further pointed out that the black cat and protagonist’s wife images, functioning as external containment, present the complexity of humanity.Edgar Allan Poe’s novels, which created a lot of psychopaths characters touching the unconscious field, have an important influence on the development of psychology.
