The traditional proportional solenoid has disadvantages, such as big size and difficulty removing. So this paper introduces a new type of bi-directional proportional solenoid, and expounds the structure and working principle in detail. On this basis, the mathematical model of the proportional solenoid is established, and its output characteristic is analyzed bythe finite element tool Ansoft/ Maxwell. Its structure parameters' influence on the output characteristic also is discussed through the electromagnetic field analysis. The simulation results show that this new type of bi-directional proportional solenoid can obtain a good static characteristic without the same magnetic circuit control of the traditional proportional solenoid.
