Mitochondria plays a major role in cell energy metabolism, therefore, mitochondrial dysfunction inevitably participates in the development and progress of liver diseases. Assessment of liver mitochondrial function in vivo could provide insight into specific liver function and the pathogenesis of liver diseases, and will be a helpful tool for establishing diagnosis, assessing therapeutic response and predicting prognosis. 13C breath test with the advantages of noninvasion, high accuracy and real-time measurement, could be used for the assessment of liver mitochondrial function in vivo.
