Restroom equity: What can and should be done to create equitable access to public restrooms.

This paper explores an issue of women's rights that is avoided or made into a joke - the insufficient provision of public restrooms for females. While men seldom have to stand in line, females expect to wait for access. Looking at published information, and analyzing possible historical, biological, sociological, and cultural reasons for facilities inequity and the resultant effects on citizenship, social justice and civil rights, the conclusion is drawn that unequal public toilet provision is the result of the embodiment of male power and patriarchal values within cultural and political institutions. Seen as a civil rights issue, a call goes out to policy makers and the public to engage in discussion and action - a call for cultural transformation in which all citizens, regardless of gender, regardless of social or personal responsibilities, regardless of encumbrances or physical impairment, have the right to access public toilets with speed and dignity.
