The effects of electronic portfolios on the professional development and quality of portfolios of kinesiology students.

A quasi-experimental study was conducted to investigate the effects of electronic portfolios on professional development of kinesiology students and the quality of the portfolios, employing a one between and one within factor repeated measures design. The non-probability sample consisted of undergraduate students who had enrolled in a kinesiology course in spring 2008 in a four-year university in South Texas. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected and analyzed to answer the research questions. Analyses of the quantitative data showed that electronic portfolio training had no effects on the professional development of the participating students, and that the effects of electronic portfolio on the quality of the portfolio were also not statistically significant. However, analysis of the effect sizes showed that organization, content knowledge, collaboration, and creativity components of the portfolio, as well as the total score, were positively affected by the intervention. Analysis of the qualitative data suggested that electronic portfolios would become imperative in the future for employment purposes. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
