Evaluation of Mandatory Cooperative Education Experiences in Associate Degree Programs.

The positive effects of cooperative education on students' GPAs, retention, and completion have been documented by researchers; however, few higher education institutions require these experiences as mandatory components of the curriculum. Given the projected shortfall of college graduates needed to meet the changing demands of the workforce, colleges, and universities will need to take risks and implement best-practice solutions that improve graduation rates. The purpose of this study was to examine students' perceptions of participation to evaluate the inclusion of a mandatory cooperative education course as a component in all of the Rowan College at Gloucester County Business Studies Associate in Science and Associate in Applied Science Degree Programs. This was accomplished through the use of a descriptive survey research design methodology that included both surveys and interviews. Forty-one students participated in the research for a response rate of 46.1%. A majority of the students agreed that these experiences positively affected their confidence and preparedness. A majority also felt that they had opportunities to demonstrate competency in collaboration, professionalism and work ethic, problem solving, and communication. Most importantly, student participants strongly agreed that these experiences positively affected their educational and career goals. Specific feedback collected during the interview process provided suggestions for curriculum enhancements and the integration of innovative marketing techniques.
