Comparison of motivational orientation preferences of traditional and virtual workplace employees.

The purpose of this research was to explore differences that existed in the motivational orientation preferences of individuals who work in varying work environments throughout the United States. The overall design for the study was a quantitative research design utilizing non-experimental survey research methodology to collect responses from a purposeful sample with the intention of identifying known differences based on statistical analysis of participants' responses. There were 229 individuals who participated in the research study, that collectively worked in both traditional work locations, defined as company provided work spaces (i.e. corporate office), and in a virtual capacity. Participants ranged in ages from 18-65 with varying occupations, educational backgrounds and tenure within their occupations. Data analysis identified differences that existed amongst individuals intrinsic and extrinsic motivational orientation factors based on work location, age and educational background. This research provides the framework for additional research in the field to further investigate differences in motivational orientation preferences and experiences of individuals working in today's workforce. This information is useful in improving organizational climate, understanding factors of motivation within the workplace, aide in the development of performance improvement plans, organizational policies and practices, as well as, aide in employee retention and acquisition. With advances in technology and the world of work constantly evolving it is important to expand our knowledge base to understand what motivates employees, and to what degree employees differ in their motivational orientation preferences.
