A PHILOSOPHICAL DELINEATION OF THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF WELLNESS EDUCATION TO THE OBJECTIVES OF GENERAL EDUCATION WITHIN THE UNDERGRADUATE CURRICULUM.

Scope and Method of Study. This study examines the contributions of wellness education to the objectives of general education in the undergraduate curriculum. The purpose of this research was to provide a philosophical foundation and justification for the inclusion of wellness education in the undergraduate curriculum as a general education requirement. The philosophical delineation included analysis and synthesis based on: the goals and objectives of general education, current recommendations for the reform of the undergraduate curriculum, the philosophy of health, the principles of health education, and the dimensions and components of wellness.;Findings and Conclusions. This philosophical delineation presented four basic arguments for the inclusion of wellness education within the undergraduate curriculum. Wellness education contributes to the education of the whole person, one of the basic tenants of general education. Many antecedents exist for wellness education based on the previous consideration of health and physical education within the undergraduate curriculum. Wellness education is appropriate and adaptable to current recommendations for curricular reform. The expansion of wellness education beyond the traditional parameters of health education increases its contribution to general education objectives.
