摘要

An examination of the foundations of Science, Technology and Society (STS) draws attention to the importance of developing a viable working view of STS Education that is consistent with many contemporary proposals for reform. The integration of moral and ethical perspectives in STS education is explored. Within this conceptual framework, a case study of an innovative and rather unique science course entitled Science in Society is provided. The course is monitored in its entirety in order to clarify: the precise nature of the goals of STS Education, how these distinctive goals of STS might best be achieved in the classroom, the special features of the course that are particularly relevant to STS and the pedagogical implications of initiating such a program. Documentation and analyses of Science in Society are included from the perspective of the teacher and the students. In the conclusion of the thesis, practical and theoretical recommendations, suggestions and insights are provided in an effort to achieve relevance and excellence in science education.
