The study describes the introduction of the Internet to public libraries in Florida through a demonstration project conducted by the State Library of Florida with the Tampa Bay Library Consortium. The primary focus of the study was the training received by the participants and how this training could be improved upon. The study dealt with the following: initial training sessions; training difficulties for staff; training practice for staff; impact of the Internet; and support needed. Data was collected using surveys, logsheets, and onsite interviews. Conclusions reached included: the "train the trainers" concept; learning curve; planning for staff training; patron training; the impact of the Internet on services and staff attitudes; and the concept of support.;Implications for libraries were (1) actual use must follow training as closely in time as possible; (2) planning for training and practice must be considered an essential staff activity; and (3) sufficient time must be allocated for practice. Finally, the training materials must be tailored to fit the needs of the trainees. Recommendations are made for future study that include studying: the attitude of the public concerning the use of the Internet by the public library; the impact of the Internet on the changing roles of libraries; the way in which Internet usage differs by type of library; and the role of library schools preparing students to use the Internet in their professional careers.
