摘要

In this dissertation, I trace the relationship that the poet has with the community through four modes of poetic writing. The nahuas from Central Mexico, the Greeks, and the Medieval poets converge in the Renaissance. The first three poetic visions are well grounded in a rhythm that follows the vision of the community, while Renaissance poetry makes use of a new dimension: personal experience. Similarly, Luis Vaz de Camoes and Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, though they might seem like disparate poets, point toward a poetic that is shaped by their personal experience and their respective community, or lack thereof. With the Renaissance, hence, a new poetic voice emerges with the use of the empirical personal as origin of reasoning and knowledge. This is the voice that establishes the foundations for the great poetic movements of the latter centuries.
