Development and Operations (DevOps) is an innovative software development methodology being used by organizations in order to speed up software development and improve the quality of software produced. The keys to DevOps success are collaboration between united software development teams, operations teams, and customers and automation of processes that slow down traditional software development paths. Successful DevOps practices lead to shorter system development lifecycles, lowered operational costs for organizations, and innovative software design. DevOps was originally popular with small start-up organizations with modern software platforms, however, it is now being used by established organizations with large scale legacy systems. Organizations with large scale legacy systems need to approach DevOps differently than start-up organizations due to the challenges of legacy system architecture.;The purpose of this research was to examine the challenges organizations with large legacy systems face when moving from legacy to the DevOps methodology for system deployment. DevOps cultural changes and adoption paths were explored, traditional and modern software development models were assessed, and legacy system anti-patterns were addressed. Additionally, case studies for Hewlett Packard, The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and Cisco were reviewed.
