This study was conducted to see if a tutorial increases the manipulative skills and attitudes toward mathematics of college students in a beginning algebra setting. A class of students was provided with Casio FX 2.0 calculators while another class used Texas Instruments TI-83 calculators. Although both of these calculators have built-in systems that solve algebraic equations, only the Casio tutorial has a step-by-step process that can help students learn how to find the solution for themselves. The length of the treatment was three weeks and the tutorial was used solely for solving linear equations. Pre- and post-tests measuring cognition and questionnaires designed to measure attitude changes toward algebra and solving linear equations were administered. The study was designed to observe both immediate understanding and retention. The study showed an increase in manipulative skills as well as positive improvements in attitude when using this tutorial.
