Mathematics teacher change: Teaching the Alberta High School Applied Mathematics Program.

The goal of this study was to describe key aspects of teaching and implementing the Alberta high school Applied Mathematics program in terms of actual experiences. It examined the types of changes that would be necessary for traditional teachers to teach the applied program. It also identified factors that influenced change based on the actual teaching experiences of two high school Applied Mathematics teachers.; Data was gathered through an interview and a written narrative. Profiles of teaching the applied curriculum were also included. The analysis included two case studies and identified themes that were compared with previous conclusions found in the reviewed literature.; The findings identified four types of change including the role of the teacher, the role of the student, the role of technology, and philosophy of mathematics. The findings also examined four factors that influenced change. Those factors were identified as school context, collaboration, teacher attitude, and teacher background.
