A communication-based predictive model of physician job dissatisfaction.

The purpose of this study is to generate a predictive model for job dissatisfaction that can be generalized among physicians. This model proposes that the communicative social work environments of physicians explain their job dissatisfaction. The investigation examines four predictor variables: physician-patient interactions, dialectical tensions, occupational stress, and physician burnout in their explanation of job dissatisfaction.; A total of 240 physicians participated in the study. Data were collected using a questionnaire that contained five scales, the SWS-JD; PPI; DT; MBI-HSS; and the OSI Scales. The reliabilities for the scales are illustrated as follows. The Cronbach alpha (alpha) for each scale is, SWS-JD is alpha = .94; PPI is alpha = .73; DT is alpha = .94; MBI-HSS is alpha = .86; and the OSI is alpha = .87. The high levels of internal consistencies of the scales items demonstrate the reliability and validity of the scales. Path analysis method is utilized to formulate predictive inferences using correlational data.; These findings show that there is a linear relationship among the variables studied. The estimated total predictive effects of path analyses indicate that physician-patient interactions and dialectical tensions variables explain 38.2% (R2 = .382; R 2adj = .377) of the variance in occupational stress. The physician-patient interactions, dialectical tensions, and occupational stress variables explain 35.7% (R2 = .357; R2adj = .354) of the variance in physician burnout. All the predictor variables of the study explain 46.2% ( R2 = .462; R2 adj = .459) of the variance in physicians' job dissatisfaction. The theoretical model is consistent with empirical data. These analyses underscore and support the idea of developing a job dissatisfaction model that is generalizable within HCPOs.; The results further suggest that future research in HCPOs should include physicians' communicative social work environments to explore factors that lead to dissatisfaction. Moreover, research should examine physicians' job attitudes through theoretical lenses of the motivator-hygiene and social information processing theories. The HCPOs ought to investigate their organizations to develop interventions that eliminate or limit hygiene factors that contribute to physicians' dissatisfaction and the propensity to leave the organization, and or the medical profession.
