A grounded study on how spirituality in the workplace impacts a person's job satisfaction.

The intent of this grounded study was to research the impact that workplace spirituality has on a person's job satisfaction. By highlighting some of the best examples and experiences of the participants who are integrating spirituality and work, theory was generated that is intended to provoke and ignite the imagination in terms of what is possible in the future of spirituality at work and a person's job satisfaction. The participants for this study were selected to participate because of their diverse beliefs and various vocations. In the winter of 2004 through the interviewing process, participants provided a rich and emotional description of their workplace and their spirituality. This research ultimately uncovered their perceptions, beliefs, and their impressions of their spirituality and their leaders in the workplace. A review of the literature traces the history of work and examines workplace spirituality and spiritual leadership theories. The meaning, design, opulence, nature, and the future of work are discussed. In order to better understand the evolution of spirituality in the workplace, and spiritual leadership, a framework is established that is based upon the works of Conger (1995), Mitroff and Denton (1999), and Giacalone and Jurkiewicz (2003). The study revealed a variety of themes that were common to many or all of the co-researchers. All of the collected evidence from this research points to a strong and significant relationship between workplace spirituality and a person's job satisfaction and/or job dissatisfaction. Findings in this study argue for leaders to provide ways to implement workplace spirituality for the purpose of employee job satisfaction. This implementation could have a positive impact on the workplace, which in turn may lead to beneficial outcomes for the organization as a whole.
