The Missing Hours is a novel that attempts to explore the culture of American paranoia toward the end of the last century. Set in Washington, D.C., in 1994, the novel follows Thomas Jefferson Woodbern as he reluctantly becomes involved in a possible conspiracy involving Vince Foster, a White House lawyer who was found dead in a Virginia park the previous year. When Woodbern begins to see the supposedly deceased White House counsel walking the streets of Washington, he begins to question his sanity as well as the easy assumptions that underlie his personal and political complacency. By the end, he chooses to forget the possible conspiracy, although his willed ignorance is not without serious consequences.; The novel draws on several memoirs of the period as well as such theorists of American paranoia as Richard Hofstadter and Timothy Melley.
