Glare occurs when light of relatively high intensity from an unwanted direction affects the eye. This might cause discomfort and sometimes may even effect the ability of a person to perceive the image properly.; To address this problem a novel CMOS glare sensor is designed to detect the direction of glare sources and obtain information regarding the intensity of glare. This sensor is designed keeping in mind the low power consumption issues that a portable, light weight product using this sensor may require. Such glare sensor therefore only needs to determine which pixels experience light higher than a specific threshold. The sensor instead of trying to process the entire image, determines if the glare source is more than a set threshold or not. This enables the design to have a very low power consumption compared to other image sensors for cameras and cell phones. Each pixel and its support electronics are designed in such a way as to obtain extremely low power consumption.* (Abstract shortened by UMI.); *This dissertation is a compound document (contains both a paper copy and a CD as part of the dissertation).
