This thesis will investigate the hardware and software on the market for 8--12 year old girls, preferences in play patterns for this user group and identify a design opportunity that will be used to generate the final design concept to target this segment of the market.;Key Words: aggression, computer, games, experience, design, gender, hardware, internet, mobile, software.;Chapter 1 will provide an introduction, outlining the significance of the study and the objectives of the project. Chapter 2 will identify key areas of opportunity for development in software, hardware, play patterns and future developments in experience design, to gain insight into how girls 8--12 years of age interact with and access technology. Chapter 3 culminates the key opportunities identified in the background research, providing a description of the main functions of the product and aesthetic considerations to be detailed in the resolution of the final design intervention. Chapter 4 will detail possible design directions for the final intervention. An assessment based on the opportunities identified in the brainstorming will be conducted to outline the descriptors for the final design intervention. In the last part of the investigation, refinement of one concept will be used to generate the final design intervention. Chapter 5 details the specifications for the design intervention based on the function and appearance of the device, considering the design of the hardware in relation to the interaction of the Chat Circles website. In conclusion, recommendations will be provided for the future development of games for girls.
