Does love conquer all? Mate selection preferences in relation to the storge love style.

This study examines the strategic mate selection preferences of undergraduate students in relation to a specific love style. A sample of 116 students aged 18 to 52, consisting of 67 males and 49 females, participated in this study. Love was operationally defined by the companionate based storge love style (Lee, 1973). The love styles of participants were determined by the Love Attitudes Scale Short Form (LAS; Hendrick, Hendrick, & Dicke, 1998). Mate preferences were determined by the Factors in Choosing a Mate questionnaire (FCM; Buss, 1989). Demographic and background data were also collected. Chi square analyses were computed to make comparisons between the storge love style and preferences for physical attractiveness and earning potential in prospective marriage mates. No significance was found in the differences between storge and non-storge participants in their preferences for physical attractiveness and earning potential in mates. The results of this study indicated both genders selected mates in accordance with currently held mate selection constructs without regard to the storge love style. This study provides a framework for examination of evolutionary mate selection theory and social exchange theory in relation to love as potential factors influencing the mate selection process.
