跨文化传播视角下林语堂编译研究

摘要

林语堂的文学创作和翻译成就在中国现代文学史和翻译史上具有独特的、不可替代的作用，“两脚踏中西文化，一心评宇宙文章”正是他文学创作和翻译生涯的写照。林语堂的作品具有创作中含翻译，翻译中含创作，著译中含编译的鲜明特色。本论文则立足于这一鲜有人谈及的林语堂的编译现象，对其编译思想和策略进行了从宏观到微观的研究，并探索了林语堂编译成功背后的原因，揭示了林语堂编译行为给跨文化传播和翻译研究领域带来的巨大贡献。
　　 本论文以六个章节对以上问题进行了深入的分析:
　　 第一章是文献综述，回顾了20世纪30年代以来学者们对林语堂及其著译作品的研究成果以及20世纪80年代以来另一些学者们对传统意义上编译的论述。近些年从不同角度对林语堂编译作品的探讨越来越多，但其中还存在着一些明显不足之处。我们的研究发现，林语堂的编译行为不仅仅是编辑和翻译的简单叠加，而是翻译、编辑、创作的有机结合，这些都全面地体现在他的编译作品当中。
　　 第二章是对林语堂编译行为的界定。首先概述了早期学者们对编译活动的研究。基于林语堂的编译事实，从宏观角度指出林语堂编译不仅有别于传统的翻译，而且也有别于传统的编译，是对传统编译的进一步发展与升华。最后从对林语堂编译作品的列举、分类、特点等三个方面对林语堂编译进行了界定。
　　 第三章是本文的重点部分，主要从微观的角度对林语堂四部著译作品进行深入分析，归纳总结出七种编译策略，即“选”、“改”、“释”、“创”、“评”、“缩”和“省”，并选取了典型例子来说明每一种编译策略，阐释其方法、原因及其效果，从而再现了林语堂的整个编译过程。从确立翻译目的到选取合理材料，从安排章节内容到翻译改写原作，这些都反映了林语堂选材慎重、读者立场、精益求精的崇高译者素养。
　　 第四章探讨了林语堂编译行为背后的深层动因及其理论支持。从林语堂的编辑出版家身份、独树一帜的编译思想、功能翻译理论和接受美学等四个方面进行了深入讨论，指出除了受到赞助人或委托人的影响之外，传播中国文化是推动林语堂整个编译行为的一个主要因素。
　　 第五章揭示了林语堂编译研究的价值，为翻译领域提供了一种新的翻译策略，他的这一编译思想和策略使得中国文化的传播获得成功，并为典籍英译提供了新的视角与方法。
　　 第六章是本文的结论，主要回顾了本研究的要点，同时也指出研究的困难和不足，其中有一些林语堂编译作品因各种原因未能找到与其对应的原文，这就为将来的研究留下了一定的空间。
