On Comprehension of Animal Metaphors in Chinese and English from Cognitive and Cultural Perspectives

摘要

现今中英两种语言中存在着大量的动物隐喻，客观的文化背景和人们的主观因素又给动物隐喻的理解带来了一定难度。而很多研究动物隐喻的论文只局限于从中英文化的角度解释一些简单的文化现象，或者从认知角度探讨动物作为源域向人类和其他领域的投射。作者认为他们的缺陷在于都没有系统地讨论这些动物隐喻的理解过程。只有通过系统地分析动物隐喻的理解过程，才能找出一些可能造成动物隐喻理解困难的主客观因素，才能使人们采取有效措施避免困难并提高对动物隐喻的理解。 本文引用束定方在《隐喻学研究》一书中提出的隐喻理解过程来探讨动物隐喻的理解。隐喻的理解有两个步骤，首先要识别隐喻，然后在理论和语境的协助下推断隐喻意义。在文章的主体部分，作者首先探讨动物隐喻的普遍性和文化差异性，然后再对一些有代表性的中英动物隐喻进行理解过程的探讨，最后总结出一些导致动物隐喻理解难度的主客观因素并提出一些提高理解动物隐喻的方法。 通过对中英动物隐喻理解过程的研究，本文发现只是依靠概念隐喻理论和语境元素理解动物隐喻是不够的，人们自身的主观因素给动物隐喻的理解带来了一定难度。这些主观的因素可能包括人们对动物的兴趣和爱好，和个人的联想能力等方面。鉴于此，本文认为人们应该在吸收有效的理论和文化背景知识的同时，注意培养自己对动物的兴趣进而提高对动物的了解，注意发展与他人讨论和联想尽可能多关于动物在不同文化中的信息的能力。 尽管文中关于英汉动物隐喻的理解过程的研究有一定的局限性，但该研究有一定的意义。通过对动物隐喻理解过程的探讨，本文对于一贯只用理论和有限的文化背景知识理解隐喻的人们指出了新的方向：在已有的理论和文化背景知识下，人们还要从自身的主观因素出发提高对动物隐喻的理解。
