This thesis investigates the market-led economic integration process in the region of Northeast Asia, among China, Japan and South Korea. The trade patterns and FDI flows andcharacteristics between the countries are examined, trade share patterns, intra-regional trade shares of the region as a whole and of each country are analyzed, intra-industry trade shares and export similarities are considered to draw conclusions about the process of de facto integration inthe region. Regional production networks are examined through commodity trade analysis inorder to reveal the nature of economic interdependence of the three countries. Finally, the implications and suggestions for further economic cooperation between the three countries and institutionalized integration in the region are made.
