从功能对等看习语翻译中的形象处理

摘要

It is universally acknowledged that idioms are heavily culture-loadedlanguage. English and Chinese are both rich in idioms, which are peculiarin their structural stability and semantic unity We also note that imagesare the main carrier of cultural message in idioms. The translation ofidioms involves not only the transferring of meaning, but also therendering of images. To do the latter, we should first be clear about thesimilarities and differences between images in English and Chineseidioms, and the relationship between image and its associative meaning.In fact, differences between cultures cause many more severecomplications for the translator than do differences in language structure.
