As wireless LANs are becoming ubiquitous and an integral part of the infrastructure, they will increasingly be used for multimedia applications. However, there is little support for quality of service in the current IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol, and IEEE task group E is working on the 802.11e MAC extension, whose effectiveness is still under investigation. Some investigations have revealed that bursty traffic face starvation in the proposed Enhanced DCF of 802.11e especially during heavy system loads. Thus, we propose here an extension to EDCF involving class-based queuing mechanism, which guarantees a minimal bandwidth to all the traffic classes to prevent starvation. We have implemented a simulator to evaluate and compare the EDCF schemes to quantify the expected performance gain of our proposed scheme.
